Rice has been supporting organizations and individuals
as an executive coach, change consultant, facilitator, and
trainer for the past 25 years. In 1987, before the word “coaching”
became part of the business vocabulary, Ms. Rice had the foresight
to found a coaching company focused exclusively on optimizing
the professional development and effectiveness of managers
and leaders. Her venture has evolved and is now called The
Boston Coaching Company. It currently includes 12 associate
coaches. Ms. Rice is the president.
Ms. Rice studied systems theory and adult learning theory
for her master’s degree in education from Cambridge
College in Massachusetts. Systems theory is the foundation
for a number of proprietary processes and products she has
developed to support the emerging field of executive coaching.
In 1995, she created the first iteration of her PaperRoom™
program, which is a powerful discovery method that explores
the personal history, assumptions, values, and barriers of
managers and executives. She has delivered the PaperRoom for
over 800 clients individually, and expanded it into a workshop
for Time Inc, which she has been leading for four years and
receiving rave reviews. In 2003, her book about how to make
the right professional choices, Choice Points: Navigate
your Career using the Unique PaperRoom Process, was published
by Davies-Black.
Ms. Rice also created the Partnership PACT™
in 1988, a collaborative coaching and mentoring model for
groups and individuals seeking to embrace new knowledge while
retaining old wisdom.
Ms. Rice is currently writing It’s About Time:
Crossing the Gap Between Life’s Second and Third Quarters.
Based on her experience—and that of her clients—that
life before age 50 is just “homework for what you’re
really going to do when you grow up,” the book provides
guidance to those who want to make life and career changes
but are unclear about what they want to do and what steps
to take to create lasting change.
Before she was a coach, Ms. Rice held management positions
in the services industry, where she learned first-hand about
the challenges and pressures faced by managers.
Ms. Rice lives in a pre-Revolutionary War house in West Newbury,
Massachusetts with her husband, Vincent Harrild, (an antique
furniture restoration artisan), and their cats, Larry and
Tom. Her son, Dan, lives in India, and her daughter, Laura,
in New York City.
